When do you know you have to find the stud to attach things to a wall? For example, if you wanted to attach a:

1) picture
2) shelf
3) mirror
4) towel hanger

In what cases do you have to find the stud in order to attach these?

If the object you are hanging on the wall is heavy (mirror, large shelf) you want to hit a stud with the hanger fastener. Items that will be pulled on (towel rack) should also have sufficient attachment to avoid being pulled off the wall. Smaller pictures would not usually need a stud for the fastener.

You don't necessarily need to find a stud to attach anything to a wall. You do however need to use wall anchors.

When your wall is full of holes and you haven't hit a stud yet, it's time to try a stud finder.

It depends on how heavy the object is. If it's a small picture or mirror I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are putting up a shelf that will hold books or something heavy you will need more support.
