I don't keep saltwater fish but I wok at a pet shop and I'm just trying to figure out some things about those fish. It says only 1 clownfish to a tank, I'm assuming that is a total of one, and you can't do one of each type (like 1 maroon with 1 percula and 1 clarkii).

If that is true, can it at least be done with larger tanks (in excess of 150 gallons). Do they fight because there is not enough room for them to defend their territory?

Hey, Ryan, I've also worked in pet stores, and it should be one SPECIES per tank (as juveniles) or one clownfish, or one mated pair if adults.

If you get a shipment of juveniles that were tank raised or captive bred, they've probably been raised together until they were shipped, so you should still be able to keep them together. So if they come to you in one bag, put all the fish from the bag (at least) into the same tank or section.

I've seen mixed species tank, but these have been more on the order of 300+ gallon display tanks, and the fish were raised together in it to keep down aggression - the fish were all able to establish their own territory before they matured.

The reason for keeping the adults separated is because of territoriality, and this is true for most marine fish. You shouldn't mix members of the same family, same body shape, or similar colors in the same tank, because a fish may see another tankmate as a rival.

Yes and no..Clowns can be very aggressive so normally in a pet store they are separated unless they are young or one is smaller than the other.
It is not a good idea to mix clowns ,like a percula with a maroon. The maroon is very aggressive and the percula is very layed back so the maroon would harass it and kill it simply because it can.Clowns do not normally like other clowns.
A pair of percula clowns can be housed together in a small tank,,30 gallons or more.Maroon clowns get much bigger there for need a larger tank and maroons are very aggressive.
You can get a pair of clowns to live happy together if you buy them young and one being bigger than the other. When they get older one will become the female and the other the male.
I have a pair of maroon clown babies with several other fish in a 135 gallon tank.

They say this because clownfish are territorial so they will fight each other especially if not added at the same time. If you add 2 jueveniles at the same time of the same species and raise them together you shouldnt have a problem even in as small as a 55 gallon tank. They do not need an anemone to be happy in a home aquarium in fact i have an anemone and a percula clown and my clown hosts my thermometer and never once went near the anemone. Just as you have a better chance of clowns getting along if you add them at the same time as jueveniles, you have just as good of a chance as clownfish hosting an anemone if you buy a clownfish and an anemone that the clown is already hosting. Not tyo say that it isnt possible to work otherwise but those are always your bests bets.

You can have a total of TWO clownfish per aquarium, but they can be one pecula and one ocellaris, or one maroon and one tomato clown, it doesn't matter which species of clown but if you put three in; one will end up dead sooner or later, could be a month could be 6!!!! By the way one should be much smaller!! In a ratio by inches 3:1 so there should be at least 1.5 in. difference!

My husband says that clown fish are best in pairs and you should have one clown fish per ten gallons of water...so, if you have 2 fish you should have 20 gallons...4 fish should be 40 gallons! You should not put odd numbers in a tank together and they should be the same KIND of clownfish!

finding nemo depicts cute little clown fish as loving social animals. when really they are not that way at all. if you have a ginormous tank with alot of sea anenome you may try to put more than one clown fish ( any type) in there. but really they are quite nasty little fish.
