As a base instinct, men want to be left alone. This usually places them within a more libertarian worldview, a view where as long as they don't bother others, others won't bother them. For the broad range of issues, the republican party is more in line with this thinking. Democrats have made political hay over how much the government should be doing (by intrusion into our lives), that the resulting backlash caused self-sufficient men to look elsewhere. In a two-party system, when your needs aren't being met, there isn't too many other ways to turn.

Because Republicans are generally conservative, which means they like the way things are and don't want any change to take place. Since men have been in power for so long, they don't want any change, and are therefore most likely to be Republicans.
