There are two things that cause cracking. Irregular waterings and too much water at one time.

When a tomato plant's soil is allowed to dry out, and then receives a lot of water all at once (usually in a well-intended effort to make up for lack of water earlier), cracked fruit is almost always the result. It's sort of like stretch marks on someone who's gained a lot of weight rapidly. The best thing you can do to prevent the problem is to keep the soil evenly moist, and water very regularly.

Once your tomatoes start to turn color you need to stop the water--watering them like crazy causes them to crack. If there is a big storm on the way then pick all of the ones that have turned pale green and put them in a box in a single layer and cover with newspaper and check each day, they will taste the same and ripen rapidly without cracks.

It is a watering problem.. It could be caused by mother nature (rainfall) or home watering any changes in watering can cause this. If you had lots of rain early in the season try to continue deep watering yourself during the dryer periods, to keep it consistent.

If this is an ongoing, yearly problem, you might want to check out one of the newer crack resistant varieties of tomatoes, such as Park seeds"Whopper".
Good Luck!

It is their reaction to uneven watering. If they get adequate amounts of water but then end up over-dry their skin will crack like that.
