Unfortunately, yes, very normal. It'll start growing back when you stop nursing.

It depends on how it is falling out. Mine came out at around 3 or 4 months. It was very noticeable around my forehead. This was all the hair that stayed attached when I was pregnant. Many post partum mommies will find that they start losing hair again normally after 3 or 4 months.

However, if you are finding round bald patches on your head, this could be alopecia areata (sp?) and you should see a dermatologist to get help. This happens sometimes to women who have had babies, to people who have had recent surgery, or other trauma. I developed this condition about 5 months after the birth of my son by c-section, so the doc's consensus is that it was caused either by the pregnancy or surgery.

If you feel that you are losing too much hair (not just the normal shedding of all the hairs you didn't lose while pregnant) definitely take the time to see your GP, OBGYN, or dermatologist.

Good luck!

This is normal for some women. When you are pregnant, the change in your hormone levels causes your hair follicles to "hold on" to hairs that normally would have been shed a few at a time. (you know how you normally find a few hairs in your brush each morning??)

After you give birth, your hormone levels readjust and the hair follicles that have been holding on to "old" hair release these strands that should have slowly fallen out over the past nine months to make room for new hair growth. Since you have about 9 months of "old hair" build up...it can seem quite shocking when it all starts coming out! lol

By the way...hair is made of keratin :)

Absolutely.

While you're pregnant, the rush of hormones causes your scalp to retain hair better. That's why your hair looks fuller and healthier (not because of prenatal vitamins, contrary to popular wisdom.) After you have the baby, your hormones start to level out, and all that hair starts to catch up with you, and it starts coming out in alarmingly thick clumps!

The hormones from breastfeeding can delay this a little bit.

Provided you aren't having bald patches as a result, then you're just fine.

Yes, and it has nothing to do with breastfeeding. It's called "postpartum alopecia" which means hair loss after a baby is born. Remember all that thick wonderful hair that you had during pregnancy? It was only a loan, and now you're paying it back with interest. I promise it will come back. Cut bangs to hide it. After my children were born, I had the hairline of a middle aged man, but it all came back both times. Congratulations, and keep breastfeeding! It's totally worth it!

Yes. It is due to hormonal changes after pregnancy. When you are pregnant your hair typically gets very thick and you don't lose as much because of hormones. After pregnancy, you start to lose the hormones. Your hair shouldn't be falling out so much that it causes bald patches. It will level off and your hair will return to it's pre-pregnancy state in a couple of weeks.

I don't know if it's normal for hair to just fall out, but my hair did thin out A LOT after my baby was born.

My baby is 8 months and mine goes through falling out spells. For about a week a bunch will come out, then only a few will fall out, then it will start all over again. Hormones! Aaarrgg!!

Yes, for some reason it tends to happen. I personally know someone that happened to and her hair has since grown back. Don't worry it's just one of those things that comes with having a baby.

I didn't read the other answers but you may want to call your doctor and have them check your thyroid. Pregnancy can alter hormones in your body, and your thyroid is one that can be affected. Other symptoms may be present if this is off, but one of them can be losing your hair. The same thing happened to me with each of my kids, but only the second one did my hair shed. That was the symptom that led me to get blood work done.
