Has anyone ever called in to work to say you're not coming in today? And as a result gotten in trouble or fired over it? Because am thinking about doing this Saturday. Am a full time employee in California with full time benefits which includes pto and personal days.

You are in a better position than me at the moment. I have been working very hard at school this week, because it is the last week of my last class of college. I have been preparing my final presentation which i gave today, and i stayed up so late last night that my alarm didn't wake me up today until 2 pm. I just started this job, too - and it is a good job! I hope i don't get fired tomorrow.

It depends on your employers policy, but every company I've worked for gives people general-purpose "personal days" rather than "sick days", and don't particularly care why you take those days off. And really, I don't see why any company should poke into your personal life and decide what is and isn't important enough to have to take a day off for - an employee is not the company's property, for pete's sake. Your employer's rulebook must be dated from the stone age :-/

Work really hard next week, come early, stay late, then ask for a personal day off. It's better than calling in giving them no notice....

If you call in sick and your supervisor would see you at the mall-yes, you;re in trouble.
If you want a day off , ask for it in advance, then there can be no misunderstanding.

I would have an excuse, just to cover your rear. Allergy problems, food poisoning, something like that.

YES YOU CAN. If you don't have a documented reason then you can be fired. Period.

...what's the problem, take a personal day. They can't fire you for that.
