The only difference is the design of the cap which fits into the socket. Once upon a time, we only had BC (bayonet) lamps in the UK, so you could just ask the shop for the particular wattage you wanted. Now, you have to check to see that it has the right sort of cap. To make things worse, ES screw caps come in two sizes, with a small diameter version ("SES") often used on bulbs which are physically small. I have ended up with quite a few candle bulbs which I can't use.

A 100 W bulb should provide almost twice the light output than a 60 W bulb. Make sure that any shade you use isn't cutting the light output too much and that its capable of handling the extra heat from a 100 Watt bulb. Why not use a 20 Watt low energy lamp, that will give as much light as a 100W tungsten bulb, but only use 1/5 the power.

ES= Edison screw
BC=Bayonet cap
ES types have a screw,BC types have two small studs on opposing sides (push and turn to install or remove the lamp)

BC= bayonet connection
ES= Edison screw.
Am i right in thinking the Edison screw light bulb is more popular in the USA.
UK tends to use bayonet connection, although we do have ES also.

Yes, what they said. It's how the bulbs attach to the socket. Screw in like a normal bulb or push and twist like a tail light bulb.
