The only way you're going to change this, is to stand up for yourself. You know you're a worthwhile person. When you think someone is dissing you, tell them that isnt acceptable to you. When people see you respect yourself, they'll start to do the same thing. Dont give up if the first few people dont respond well to it. Persist in demanding that people treat you well and eventually they will.

Key to life. If you want people to respect you, you have to respect them. I don't mean this as a pat answer. The logic behind it is very very straightfoward. If you show respect for another person, they feel as if they matter to you. People like feeling like that so they will show you respect for respecting them.
Tried and tested and seems to be true.
Also another way to be respected is humility. This is because people generally get turned off by arrogance. Humility is the opposite of humility. The definition of humility is that you know who you are and what you are capable of, but don't think you are better than others because of it.

To get respect, you must first be respectable.
Respect is like money. You have to earn it. The best way to earn it is to give it away.

People will respect you only, when you start respecting yourself. Start taking yourself seriously, don't let anyone put you down. People are just like animals: they smell your fear / insecurity on you and treat you accordingly.
