My 1994 Pontiac Grand Pr ix Se is making a noise. I noticed that when ever I turn on and up the Air Conditioner the Noise gets quieter. If I turn off the Air Conditioner the noise gets louder. Its not a knocking noise but a deep whining rev-ving noise. What is the problem and what can I do to fix it? How much will it cost? Can I do it my self? I have no mechanical skills but I believe I can do it if I learn how.

You will have to get under the hood to determine if there is any problem with the serp. belt or any of the accessories that drive from the belt. The alternators, serp. belt themselves, and the tensioner were all problems in this car. If you are sure the noise is coming from the AC compressor when the compressor is off as in the AC is turned off, then you have a front hub bearing on the compressor going. These are not easy to replace and require special tools to do it. Be sure what is making the noise before repairing. Good luck.

Usually GM will catch up to you with a notification through the mail once the title is processed with your name & address. The used car dealership technically doesnt have to follow those rules of a recall like a GM dealership would have to. Next, it would depend on your VIN as well since not all 2002 Grand Prix's are included in this campaign. Yours could not fall within the VIN breakpoint & not need this fix. You can just wait for the letter to come into the mail or if you havent gotten one yet, it may mean yours isnt on the list that needs it done. The VIN breakpoint is 2F100018 --- 2F293183. So if your last 8 digits of the VI?N doesnt fall in between those 2 numbers, it means yours doesnt need it nor will GM or the dealership change that But, you could go get your oil change at a GM dealership & they are suppose to look up any open campaigns on the vehicle when they write it up & if any are open, they are suppose to inform you that it has an OPEN Recall & it should be repaired when your ready to have it done or if parts are on hand which if they arent, they would have to order them & have you come back to have it done. I didnt see a CUT OFF date on it like some have. Usually SAFETY CAMPAIGNS, there is no time limit on. What is your last 8 digits of the VIN??

Most times, that kind of thing stems from one thing . . . the belt, more than likely, there's something in the pully that's causing the belt to sing like that . . . it's a pretty simple fix, too.

Either buy some belt dressing at your local auto parts store, or Wal-Mart . . . if they don't have it, then a can of WD-40 will work just the same, spray it directly onto the belt while the engine is running . . . you'll instantly notice the change.

If that doesn't stop it, then there's only one thing that will . . . change the belt . . . in that case, if you're not mechanically inclined, I would recommend taking it to a shop that you trust, and have the belt replaced, it usually will cost no more than the belt will, plus the labor cost.
