In a few weeks I start my first term as grad student in the math department and I am a GTA. I will be in charge of 4 recitation sessions for calculus courses. Just wondering what to expect.

Don't try to fake it- make sure to prepare for the class. Even if you think that you already know it all, if you don't keep up to speed with the material you'll inevitably end up looking stupid sooner or later.

Some people will never understand derivatives. There is nothing you can do but empathize with them.

Speak English. If you can not speak good English take diction class. Do not forces students to learn your dialect.

Ask the student what grade they a trying to get. Spent most of your time with the few trying to get As.

Identify those who do not have the prerequisit knowlege.

It is typically fighting off the students who want to trade sexual favors for improved grades on homework.

Compared to that the daily checking of homework and the trying not to get stumped on questions in class is really easy.
