No, absolutely not. Black is a symbol of protection. When christians (in England, Ireland, Wales) were trying to rid the world of pagans and "witches" they turned a lot of the local beliefs around to make them bad instead of good. Black cats were kept by pagans and "witches" (who were most likely only midwives or healers) to protect them from evil -- the christians who came to convert everyone to christianity used it against them by saying black cats were bad luck and that they must be "witches' familiars" (and thus had reason to kill off those who opposed christianity) in order to further the conversion of the indigenous popuation into christianity.

Obviously, some people Do believe that black cats are bad luck.
I owned a solid black cat that was rescued as a kitten from several kids who were trying to hit it with a bat. Durring it's rather short life, it was shot at, run over (had surgery for two broken hips), came home with a dart in it's neck, and finally died when someone ran off the road with the sole intention of running it over in broad daylight in front of my husband who was mowing the lawn at the time.
So, obviously, some people feel very strongly about it.

No. They are just cats. They just happen to be black in color. They are no more bad luck than any cat of any color, although they may be hard to see in the dark, and you might trip over them. But then, the same could be said of black dogs. :)
NEVER let your black cats out of the house on Halloween. People may try to harm them out of ignorance and superstition.

The reason people think they see black cats cross their path often is because people mistake brown cats or dark colored cats as black cats, especially at night and thats were this black cat thing started. and of course black cats are not bad luck.

In some countries superstition dictates that they are unlucky and in others it says they ARE lucky. They are still lovable adorable cats. My black tom cat is curled up right beside me and my tortoiseshell lady cat just now.

Yes, people do believe they are.
However, I don't think so. I have a black cat, always wanted one, and I think they are beautiful.
