Copper is very toxic to many palnts. It forms Cupric Oxide when it contacts moisture. Cupric Oxide can kill many types of trees.

People have been known to drive copper nails into a tree they wish to be removed but cannot get the removal approved.

The tree eventually dies from Cupric Oxide poisoning.

Then it has to be removed.

its very possible...such soil contamination is not unlikely likely to kill a tree but also is very commonly seen elsewhere
