When you say gulf shores you must be talking about Gulf Shores, Alabama. The best beach has to be in the Gulf State Park, or you might convince me of Romar Beach.
Over in Florida, there's an awful nice beach at Ft. Pickens State Park and Santa Rosa Island. The further East you go, the nicer the beaches get until you get to St. Joseph Peninsular State Park where the beach is just wonderful.

Personnally I go to the Emerald Coast of Florida.
