I think the meaning of life is to forever try to find the meaning of life. It is our never ending, sole purpose. We will forever continue to question and ask ourselves why we are put here, and in order to achieve that answer, we will expand ourselves and continually reach for the horizon. Our need to have an answer to this basic and yet complex question will never be fulfilled, but it is what drives the human spirit.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

First I'd like to thank PRKWUD for that excellent, amusing tongue-in-cheek answer. At least, I think it's tongue-in-cheek.
Anyway, real meaning comes from living for a real purpose and that requires a Creator/God. Real purpose requires a God. Here's what atheist Bertram Russell tells us about purpose:
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (20th century philosopher, mathematician and Nobel Laureate)
When people tell you to create/find/make your own meaning, they are not referring to real meaning. They are referring only to feelings. They advocate spending their lives seeking good feelings and then dress it all up by deceiving themselves into thinking that they are doing what they were meant to do. Thus the feeling of meaning creeps in.
The self deception of creating our own meaning is justified because the alternative can be catastrophic:
"There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy." -- Albert Camus
But I would rather seek God (and real meaning and purpose) even not knowing for sure whether God exists.

Acording to the ancient Vedas, which are the original "How too" wisdom given to us by God at the time of creation. Of course he wouldn't leave us hanging without the manuel from the moment we got here. We are not this material body, IE; Race, color, nationality, Religion, mind, intellect, senses, job, etc. We are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We never die, only this mortal body dies.
This material world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here, and the rest are enjoying blissful eternal loving relationships with our Maker named above. Those who are intelligent, take up the process of self realization (Bhakti Yoga) which gives one real peace, happiness and reality. Then at the end of life they can return to the eternal Kingdom where there is no more birth, death, old age, or disease and be eternally happy.

It's a trick question. There is no meaning of life. We are nothing more than a freak occurence.
We only exist because a long run of very unusual and highly unlikely events just happened to take place in precisely the right order, at precisely the right time.

This question is so over used I can only say to receive 10 bonus points.
The meaning of life is what you want it to be. It will always change as you grasp a clearer reality of reality as it is.
