Although fewer in number than their male counter parts, there have been numerous important women in magical history.

Let's begin with Adelaide Hermann. An accomplished dancer, she married Alexander Hermann and joined his show as a dancer and magical assistant. Upon Alexander's death she recruited her nephew Leon Hermann for the show. After a falling out with Leon, she went on to star in her own show for many years. A link to a fuller profile is provided below.

Although better known for their film work, both Barbara Stanwyck and Tallulah Bankhead were both amateur magicians.

O'Dell, Dell (1902-1962)
One of the most successful female magicians of the 20th Century. American born, real name Nell Newton. Learned magic from her father, a carnival magician. Specialized in snappy and cute rhyming patter, and lots of promotional material. Husband Charles Carrer, a famous juggler, managed her show and constructed her trademark clever and special props. Her local television show (California) in the early 1950's was one of the first regularly broadcast magic programs.

Oeser, Amanda (1854-1932)
Austrian female magician promoted by magic dealer Conradi-Horster and magic theater owner Kratky-Baschik. She performed between 1874 and 1909 using her own real name or the stage name "Amida".

Marshall, Frances Ireland (1910-2002)
Wife and partner of L.L. Ireland and his Ireland Magic Co. in Chicago, she was an accomplished magician, specializing in children's magic. She authored a number of books on the subject. After L.L. Ireland's death, she operated the business for a number of years, then married Jay Marshall and renamed the company Magic, Inc. In 1938, she founded Magigals, an organization for women in magic.

Amoung contemporary entertainers, Melinda stars her own show in Las Vegas. The link below will take you to an article about her.

The final link, an article by Dennis Regling, should round out the contemporary women and give you an idea of the scope of women's participation in the world of magic.

Check out the whoswho link below for information on other famous magicians of both genders.
