In my family there has always been at least one of us in each generation who was called 'witch' - for perhaps a bit less than 800 years... We generally tend to be loners although as family we stick together and stand up for our black sheep as well as the white ones. The thing is until the last century we didn't really self-identify as witches. We tend to be odd in general and some of us are a bit more odd than others that's all.

I know a few that confess to be witches that are such big jokes and frauds it is unreal. One of them overnight said she had become a witch because hunting ghosts were making her wet the bed every night and so she decided that she could maybe make some money at "playing a witch" and give out made up spells. The other one became a witch because the Native American Indians would not accept her as they saw her as fraud and hurting other people. The second one is just as bad I think because she is taking something she knows nothing about to make some money.
I think these 2 are mentally ill and will try to make it bad for others who for whatever reason or how they came about in being a witch will now try to use poison on some good people.
I have in my lifetime known witches that the majority were born into it, some were in covens, some chose not to be for their own personal wishes. When it comes down to the last part of your question, I think it is a matter of personal choice and that should be respected.
Good question though, thanks.

Well all witches were self made at one time or another. There are ancestral and historical aspects to any religion. I do feel in some ways those who are born into it do have some advantages. The first being a greater knowledge and understanding of what it is to be a witch or the practises and observances there in, guidance and so on. That does not make them anymore of a witch than the loner witch as it were. just the covens create a better support mechanism and greater diversity of understanding of said religion. But this is a double edge sword, as in any religion a coven can be manipulated and said powers and positions abused. So I guess it depends. There are those witches throughout history who chose to be loners for clarity and purity of thought and practise of their chosen religion. For a better relation with the Divine spirit/goddess they have chosen to worship.
So in short it is a matter of personal choice. There are pros's and con's to both. If you are asking my opinion, covens are great. So long as they are real in their beliefs. I guess that is a danger of any religions though.
Peace!!! Health!!! Harmony!!! Love!!!

It really doesn't matter. A loner self-initiated witch is no less of a witch than the one who was born with exceptional gifts and has been trained by their grandmother, who was trained by *her* grandmother etc. etc...

I always found some people very entertaining especially when they talk about their special ancient book of shadows that was created by vikings and handed down for generations... I mean if it's true then fine but a lot of people seem to think that they're somehow superior because they belong to an old coven or because knowledge has been handed down for generations. This is entertaining because it's usually completely made up.

There are those of the crafts and there are those who choose to name themselves Witches. A great many of the "Witches" murdered as Witches by the Christians were neither part of the Crafts, the Lore, or any other organization.....mostly they were the old and those that were accused by the majority that had a grudge again them. Many Witches and others chose by their own thought or circumstance to be solitary.

A witch can choose to be in a coven or be a sole practitioner depends on their strengths.

I have always preferred the solitary path. But I enjoy the company of others during holidays and celebrations.
