I don't consider myself a "witch" anymore, so I hope it's okay if I answer your question. If not, I'll remove my answer.
"Witchcraft" simply means "sorcery". Most people think of Wicca when they read the word witchcraft.

My mother is a witch. She is a solitary, although she does have "friends" that she meets with to read astrological charts and talk about tarot, etc. But she has always been a solitary practitioner. I am also a witch, but I joined a coven when I was in my 20's.
Today I no longer associate with a coven, and I have found out, through bitter experience, that others can be very cruel if they find out about your life beliefs (if they don't agree with them). I practice my meditations alone and I have friends that accept me for what I am, and they come to me asking for tarot readings all of the time. For the most part, however, I keep it secret. Witches are still persecuted in this day and age. I live in the bible belt of the USA, and people don't take kindly to things they are ignorant about!

Never got involved with Covens, I like doing things my own way. Mostly "self-taught" but come from a family of witches (and Amerindian "medicine men") but the ones who were not medicine men (women) always tried to keep it hush-hush out of fear. I was born with some traits that I thought everyone had, like being an empath and seeing spirits and even being very intuitive. I practice alone but do enjoy the company of other witches and pagans oh holidays.

There are those of the crafts and there are those who choose to name themselves Witches. A great many of the "Witches" murdered as Witches by the Christians were neither part of the Crafts, the Lore, or any other organization.....mostly they were the old and those that were accused by the majority that had a grudge again them. Many Witches and others chose by their own thought or circumstance to be solitary.

You can practice witchcraft in a coven or as a solitary practitioner, both are acceptable.
Its all about choice.
