You said it: Sadly the study of science among the youth of today is sorely lacking.
I know people who don't even know what a galaxy is.
The earth is a planet, part of a solar system. The sun is called Sol so it is the Sol System. The Sol system is not a galaxy, it is part of a galactic group; the Orion Spiral arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. When I found out that it was common for people to think that our solar system was an entire galaxy I almost had a heart attack.
I am a fan of science fiction (that’s the S part of my nickname) so I know a good deal of science, but the lack of knowledge of simple things is scary. If you watch Jay Leno’s the Tonight Show and see his Jay Walking segments you see some of the dumbest people in the world. What makes them so dumb is not only do they get the question wrong, but they give the network permission to show just how stupid they are. Then the worst of the worst are called back to the show for a game show that illustrates just how dumb they are. They not only agree to return to show how dumb they are, they compete to show who is the dumbest. I can’t believe this!
The ignorance of some Americans is legendary. There are people who think Canada is a US state or who can’t find Iraq on a world map. It is an embarrassment.
One requirement of science fiction is that you know enough to understand what the story is about, and if you don’t then the story teaches you something. That’s how I learned about black holes and Steven Hawking back in 1970!
You have hit a sore spot with me. More people do know more about chicken soup than what a galaxy is and they don’t have a problem with that. For years our colleges have been saying that the students who graduate from high school are not ready for college and that the college graduates we are producing are not interested enough in science. Technology is the backbone of American success. We have the most powerful military in the world not because it is the biggest, but because it is the smartest. When you can shoot a missile from half the globe away and have it hit the exact window you want it to you have the ability to hit anything you want. That came from scientific research. The leader in scientific research has been the space program. Teflon for your pans, came from heat shields, the camera on top of your notebook computer came from the need for Apollo 11 astronauts to have a camera they could carry on the moon. Kevlar, most plastics, advanced ceramics, high optics, Corning Ware cooking ware are all products of the space program. We need more people to get interested in science.
By the way science has proved that not only does the steam in chicken noodle soup help you breathe when you have a cold, but there are elements in the soup that actually improve your immune system. The old wives tale that chicken soup is good for a cold is true!

It is sad, it just proves that the kids today just aren't getting a more diverse education. People are only interested in a small number of things (their favourite TV show, their current partners or ex-partners, the latest electronic gadget, game, and rock star).
Anything that doesn't have any direct effect on their sad, narrow little lives is just not of interest to them.
I learned a long time ago that true fulfillment means learning about anything, not just the silly little things that really don't matter in the grand scheme of things.

I personally love studying science...i mean i've read books from anthropology to zoology, but its the little things in life that get people hyped up as to the big things...its something you feel like you have a little more control over...
besides...why bother when your computer will do all your work for you in a few decades...people, instead of exploiting the technology available, sit back and let it do all the work for them without trying to find out the in's and out's about all the things around them, it just one less thing they have to bother about in their already "stressfull (where they do nothing at all) lives" =^P

properly, i individually think of that girls folk could sometimes ask boys out, in simple terms reason i'm a guy and dont have the coronary heart to ask them out myself. yet i think of why particularly some the adult adult males are nerve-racking approximately asking is approximately what unusual rumours would be around as quickly as he asks. sometimes it facilitates if the lady asks, it is going to provide the boy somewhat shallowness.

the real question is....why r people making so many judgements against young people. In highschool i say crap like, i science, and all the learning stuff is so boring, when secretly i love school. It's a scoial standards thing, i know it's really sad but in todays world of highschool you don't fit in when your smart. In school i'm friends with one of the "popular" kids, and secretly they're really smart, she gets all A's but when other kids at school ask her what her grades r she say she get's average like C's and D's. i don't know why kids at school don't want to accept smart kids....so sad

i feel your pain, Treasure Planet didn't do well at the box office. Why? two reasons, I believe.
Not enough focus in school on classic literature like Treasure Island.
No deliberate plan to focus children's attention on their future in space.
Kids should have been going to that movie in droves, and on field trips.
