Well, then there are 70,000 more tragedies that can happen.

Let's see if only 2 people died per bridge, oh, heavens, no, 140,000 lives are not worth a nickel tax.

God help us.

So saving the lives of strangers by you shelling out a few more dollars is a waste? That's pretty selfish. Taxes can be a burden, but would you rather live somewhere like Denmark, where the income tax rate is 40%? Well, they have universal health care and education, and year-long maternity leave, so actually sounds better than here.

In Ohio, we have 42,000 bridges (3rd highest in the nation, so don't talk to me about high taxes). We don't have enough bridge inspectors to check nearly all of them annually or the money to pay for more. I'm surprised it didn't happen here instead.

The federal government is the one that cut back financial assistance to state governments, so there isn't money in state budgets for massive rebuild projects (like New Orleans). It's all getting poured into homeland security and the war. If we weren't spending/wasting billions on Iraq, perhaps this wouldn't be such an issue. The government could borrow money if it wanted to bury the country in debt even more that it already is.

And people who meet the federal definition of poor (less than 18,000 for a family of 4) don't pay taxes. You make more than that, you're not poor. You may not be financially well off or even comfortable, but you're not technically poor.

If every time there is a tragedy, the politicians and media work together to make sure that the government expands, civil liberties are taken away, taxes are raised, and new government agencies are created, we would end up living in a total communist police state society in 20 years. That is in fact what is happening now. Politicians and big media are exploiting every tragedy for profit and power.

"A government big enough to supply you with everything you need is a government big enough to take away everything that you have.... The course of history shows that as the government grows, liberty decreases." Thomas Jefferson

"The true danger is when Liberty is nibbled away, for expedients and by parts.... The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men do nothing." Edmund Burke

"It is seldom that any Liberty is lost all at once." David Hugh

WE HAVE REMAINED A FREE CAPITALIST NATION FOR OVER 200 YEARS, I THINK WE CAN DO WITHOUT ALL OF THE GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACIES AND POLICE STATE POLICIES.
--------------------------------------------
We don't need more taxes (especially the middle class). We just need to make sure the government spends the money they already get from us ON THE RIGHT THINGS, instead of wasting it on imperialist wars and everything else! 12 BILLION a MONTH FOR THE IRAQ WAR?

Both Democrats and Republicans are big spenders who are trying to generate more revenue for their wasteful programs. They just have different ways of robbing Americans of their money. Rick Perry(R) of Texas, for example, has several billion dollars of surplus in the budget that is used to build roads and bridges, but he CONTINUES to keep taxes high, and insists that all new highways and existing highways should be converted into TOLL ROADS to pay for the roads that are already paid for (and then some)! The tax that we pay on GASOLINE is funding the roads and bridges.

Edit:

This is one reason I am voting for Ron Paul.

Many bridges are in bad state. Maybe they don't want to see anymore Americans die because the bridges need repairs.

Furthermore, I haven't seen the Cons set up any "charity funds", for bridge repairs.
They would rather donate to the Robertson, Farewells, Bakers so the minsters can live in mansions and let the bridges fall to the wayside.

The Dems are like an old Boss of mine. Everytime 1 person messed up he would add to the S.O.P. After a while the S.O.P. was 10 times as long, even though the same guy kept messing up.

Thus, everyone was doing much more work because of 1 person, reducing overall productivity.

Sometimes it is better to send one back to training than to punish all.

because 1 crapped out bridge that no one saw a collapse coming means there's probably several more highly traveled bridges that need repair. Infra structure should not be neglected. Not just for saving lives but to maintain a healthy and flowing economy.

It was the Repub rep of MN that wanted to add a 5 cents gas tax.

well... I guess we could just add all our bridge repairs (that most people want done) onto the national debt... that seems to be the republican way anymore?

how do you propose we deal with the issue? the vast majority of people think that something needs to be done, so if you say nothing, then no one really cares what you think... that's what happens to the minority in America...

Dems believe the government should be responsible for maintaining our infrastructure, and in the wake of the Minnesota bridge collapse, it's worth paying more to make sure the job gets done right.

Some people are just idiots....and Jeremy...yes you...the asker of this question...you are one of them.

Let me ask you this idiot.....how do you plan on fixing all those bridges that have been rated "desperately in near of repair".
Where shall we get the money? Out of your # 2 hole ???

ALright genius, lets hear your great idea on how to solve that problem?

By the way, how much do you make a year? I have a feeling its less than $20,000 a year---just a guess.
