Because so many people have absolutely horrible misconceptions about what is required to care for them! Properly cared for goldfish have the potential to live into their teens or 20's, with older fish regularly reported. (I personally have a 10 year old goldfish)
A goldfish(of any type, even the teeniest ones and the feeder ones) CANNOT live in a bowl!!!
Reason being, goldfish are heavy bodied fish, they produce an enormous amount of waste, and they are large growing fish(with the potential to reach a foot or more in length)
This said, they require no less than 10 gallons of water PER goldfish you plan to own. (Yes, that little 10 cent goldfish needs at least 10 gallon tank if you want him to thrive!)
In addition to this 10 gallon tank, you will need a good quality filter. This is a 100% essential piece of equiptment for having any luck with your goldfish. I strongly recommend you look up and research the 'Cycling of a Tank', or the 'Nitrogen Cycle' in additon to getting a filter.
And, most importantly, in the long term health of a goldfish is regular partial water changes(25%-50% of the water in the tank should be removed and replaced with fresh, dechlorinated water). These must happen at least once a week. It is basically 'flushing' the goldfishes toilet, which happens to be the water he lives in.
Please take some time to visit this website, it is an excellent site. www.kokosgoldfish.com

Hi Jeane, A little research beforehand goes a long way. You would die easily on Mars equipped with just a pair of Bermuda Shorts-it's all about matching the environment to the species.
The link below is an excellent overview of the complete Goldfish care package-follow it closely & you won't go far wrong.

they are very specific about stress by moving so many times. And actually do get lonely. it's better to have two or three goldfish than just one or a ton... a lot of goldfish could lead to overcrowding.
about the stress part, just use a normal conditioner for new fish. Some require new water for the bowl/tank. But it is totally worth it! It makes the water at least 150 percent better, plus it also keeps the fish from fighting.

the straightforward goldfish you desire to get are those that are a minimum of two months previous. Or 2 inches long. while they are this enormous, they have an eighty 5% possibility of surviving. i take advantage of the small straightforward goldfish to help cycle my tank and that they simply final approximately 3 weeks. the bigger ones stay for type of two years (possibly longer yet it is from previous adventure with 10 goldfish in a 55 gallon tank). You under no circumstances comprehend with goldfish however. it ought to take a pair deaths to locate ones which will stay.

Goldfish are pretty hardy fish and do well in most conditions if there basic needs are met. They die "easily" because most people don't know how to take care of them. Comets, commons and other torpedo shaped golds need at least 20 gallons each while more compact golds like orandas, fantials, and lionheads need at least 10 gallons each. People think that they can throw them into bowls and think that they'll be fine.

They don't. If you have the right setup they will live for years. You need at least a 55 gallon tank with a filter rated at least twice that for one goldfish to live. They produce a lot of ammonia and without proper care an environment they will die.

they dont, goldfish can are usually very forgiving, as they produce alot of waste but more tolerant of poor water than most.
Now if you dont give them common fish care, well there you go, you will kill the goldfish and most other fish for that matter.
Fishkeeping is what you make it to be, how much you care? and how much you want to make it.
Again goldfish can live for 20-50 years if dont correctly. Certainly not that long with bad care, I.E a bowl with no filter.

They don't always. Sometimes they come from the petsore with diseases, but a healthy goldfish given proper care can live for several years. I had one that lived to be 8 yrs old, with pretty minimal care. It lived in a 5 gallon take which was cleaned once per week. I'm sure it could have lived longer in a bigger tank and a filter though.

No they don't ive had feeder goldfish escape my clown knife and live for months, i dont even take care of them or feed them they eat the pieces that fly out when my clown knife rips apart a goldfish.
Its all about proper care i bet if i tried i could keep one alive for around 4 years then i would get bored :]
