L-theanine works very well as a stress reducer and has a calming effect.
You may notice it in some sleep remedies along with the melatonin. They work well together.
Smaller doses of 5HTP will also be effective.
Just be sure that if you are taking any prescription meds that these do not interact with them. Check with the doctor or pharmacist or natural health adviser

I have tried a number of different things over the years to help with sleeping through the night. What has helped me the most is to take a calcium supplement prior to going to bed. The calcium supplement that I take is called Intracal. The Intracal uses a form of calcium which is delivered straight to the cells. The form of calcium that is used is called calcium orotate. My personal experience is that chronic insomnia can be a problem with parasites. You might consider doing a complete cleansing as this might cleanse your body of toxins which is most likely is causing your insomnia. The melatonin can be used for occasionally insomnia. If you are suffering from chronic insomnia there is usually an underlying cause. You should consult your healthcare practitioner prior to adding any new supplement to your regimen.

Here are my favorites:
Scutellaria latiflora-Western Skullcap
Despite its ominous name, Skullcap is a gentle nervine that helps to calm the mind and reduce nervous tension. It is also used to stop muscle spasms, reduce palpitations and to induce sleep.
Albizzia spp.-he huan pi-Mimosa tree bark
Calms the "Shen" and reduces nervous tension. Has an overall calming affect on the nervous system.
Lactuca spp.-Wild Lettuce
Wild Lettuce is exceptional at calming the Spirit, promoting sleep and reducing pain. It is effective at calming a fetus in cases of threatened miscarriage. It is anti-spasmodic and calming to the nervous system.
Leonorus cardiaca-Motherwort
Motherwort dispels nervous irritability, inducing calmness to the whole nervous system. It is an excellent remedy for heart conditions, as its Latin name, "lion hearted" would suggest.
Schisandra chinensis-wu wei zi
Schizandra is a famous tonic historically consumed by Chinese royalty. It is renowned as a beauty tonic and is considered to be a youth preserving herb. It is also said to be a powerful calming tonic to the brain and mind, and is believed in China to improve memory.
Valeriana officinalis
Relaxes muscles and calms the mind.
Verbena officinalis-ma bian cao-Verbena
Verbena is added here as it will lift the Spirit while rejuvenating the nervous system and allowing us to process emotions constructively.
Lavender officinalis
