No, it's a chromosomal abnormality (Trisomy 21) and it's a total fluke. Either the sperm or the egg had 2 copies of chromosome 21 instead of 1, and it causes there to be 3 copies of chromosome 21 and this causes this syndrome. There is no gene for Downs Syndrome. It's not really passed down from a parent, these people have no idea what they are talking about. A big head is not a characteristic of Downs Syndrome, so your boyfriend is totally wrong about that. There are things to look for on a sonogram when Downs is suspected and they would have told you if your baby had some of the signs. Don't worry about it.

Dear if the baby had down syndrome, it would hve been detected right at week 17. the features of down syndrome baby are flat face, SMALL head in 17th week, less-defined facial features and ears and thats why a Frontal view is given in ultrasound. Why are you worried? did the doc mention ANYTHINg about down syndrome?
A BIG head baby is the leading cause of c-section delivery. I am sure the doctor must be worried about this. ELse he would hve informed you. Well the risk of DS increases in women after 35 years of age. But why are you asking about it being heredity? Does anyone else in your family has DS?
Just relax..8months is NOT the time whn docs detect it. its usually detected earlier than this. Just TALK CLEARLY to your doc about your worries...Good Luck..Your baby is just going to be fine..
If you are so worried why not get some tests to ease your mind..If a screening test (serum screen or nuchal translucency) suggests a 'high' risk of genetic abnormality, you will be offered amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS).
Since these carry a risk of miscarriage, you may decide not to have these tests or even a screening test if you would choose to continue with the pregnancy. Having a test, however, may reassure you that your baby is likely to be born healthy. GOOD LUCK!

I don't think a large head is a sign of Down syndrome, but I could be wrong.
It is quite possible that a previous test did not detect the Down syndrome, or whatever the problem might be. Or it might be completely normal.
The person who should be telling you what this means is YOUR DOCTOR. Not your boyfriend, and not people on YA. YOUR DOCTOR. You are already getting wrong information from your boyfriend and from other people here. You don't need that kind of thing right now, do you? Please call YOUR DOCTOR instead.

No thank you to respond to that query. Downs (trisomy 21) has no longer been linked to any genetic features. there became into none in my relatives or my wifes, we've a boy with trisomy 21 and one 3 years youthful without. it is likewise real of the mosiac sort of downs. Translocation would be examined for at a genetics lab. Routing screening would be accomplished and is in women human beings over 30. A postive try shows that there is a skill threat. Amnio centisis is the only definitive analysis for pregnant women folk. BTW: those are type, delicate, loving little ones and a recent from G&D. they are particular, my son is a wonderful shining lite in my existence and the appropriate instructor I even have ever had.

Down syndrome is hereditary however, I know some women who have healthy babies even if there is a history of retardation in the family. Don't worry about what these doctors say because I have 4 children now and I am pregnant now with my 5th child. When I was pregnant last year with my son I was 36 yrs. old and my doctor at the time told me that the baby will be retarded because of my age and I was paranoid throughout my pregnancy and my son turned out to be a healthy baby. Now I am pregnant with my 5th child and it is a girl and my new doctor is wonderful he is not saying that my child will have Downs . Some doctors love to scare they patients and it is not good. Good Luck and do not feel scared, your baby is going to be fine..

you would've already been told by your doc if the baby was at risk of having Down's Syndrome. Whatever the case, it'll be your baby and you'll love him/her anyway. Some people do just have big heads, i know at least 5 that i can think of right off the top of my head.
