I live in the mountains, and a bear keeps getting into our trash and making a huge mess. I know many of you may say well it is there territory, and yes I do agree. But this land has been in the family for four generations, and we aren't going to move. Anyhow any ideas on how I can keep him out?

I live in the mountains as well and we don't have trash pick up! Instead we have large dumpsters to take our trash to in designated areas. So I always take a bag as I head into town and drop it off. I assume your not very deep into the mountains as you have a trash pick up?? If you have trash pick up, out it out just before they come to pick it up. We still had 3 bear come last year, to feast upon a crab apple tree, and other fruit bearing bushes, perhaps this is a problem in your yard as well? Also do you have bird feeders, or pets that or fed outside? As this will also attract them to your yard. Look around there may be something more attractive to them besides your trash. If your not going to move, you need to look into this further. I personally feel blessed to have witnessed the wild in my yard!

Have you seen the complex trash receptacles they use in the National Parks in bear country? They're similar in design to mailboxes that allow stuff in, but make it very difficult to get stuff out.

Most likely there are residential equivalents out there, but if that doesn't fit your budget, you can probably construct a very strong, latchable container. Just make sure the latching mechanism is strong, and complex enough that Yogi can't figure it out.

Well let's see... You can keep your garbage INside- until just before it's picked up. Or you can elevate it off the ground so it's out of a Bears reach. Or you can BUY a small iron dumpster that LOCKS- to store your trash in... Or, you can get a particularly noisy hound-dog (who LOVE to bark at bears), to watch over your garbage cans... -Pick the one you haven't tried yet & give it a shot! Good luck. :)

Had the same problem with a chalet in the Smokies. We used a rubbermaid storage compartment, that held two garbage cans. The bears still tried to get in it, and unless the latch was fully secured they would still get in there, but it did slow them down a lot. good luck.
