As the universe gets older the galaxies move apart from each other a galaxy doesn't gain or loose mass unless another galaxy interfears with it. In that case the larger galaxy wins and absorbs all of the mass of the smaller galaxy winning out due to the gravatational pull of the larger mass so it all depends on the size of the galaxy with what happens to it

As the matter of a galaxy is converted to energy via the massive mass-to-energy converters we call stars. Most of the energy is lost in vectors radiating away from the galactic plane.
It would seem entropy has the upper hand in this situation unless there is enough density in the intergalactic medium to absorb the energy to either spark new galaxies or fuel passing galaxies.
I am curious to find out the actual amount of energy loss there is from a typical galaxy. That would account for a shrinking mass. I believe globular clusters are the remnants of old galaxies which have long burn off much the matter no longer contained within the stars.

When a galaxy matures it begins to lose mass due to the action of the engine that drives the galactic center.
A galaxy is the end stage of an evolving universe and it loses mass til it goes out of existence.
The thing that drives the galaxy is some kind of neutron star activity.

Galaxies do convert mass to energy, but there is a lot of gas out there, even if it's very thin.
As an off hand guess, Id say that more mass falls in than is 'burned`.

Galaxies lose mass. As galaxies get older, more and more mass is converted into energy inside stars by nuclear fusion.

so far the answer is lose,due to "blackholes. dark matter has a positive and negative field,thus the expanding universe.all matter in this universe happened from a singular event " bigbang.matter changes from different forces,time,events. our sun someday will be a spinning mass of lead due to gravity, size about 1/10th our moon.
