it recreates an environment or platform for you to emulate. As in, this is what you can do with your ipod, or whatever it is. Usually the window looks like an ipod, you can do the same things on the emulator as you can with your real ipod, put music on, play it, whatever

An Emulator is pretty much a program that acts like (or enables you to use things for) consoles, phones, etc. In some RARE casses you will find that using an Emulator is LEGAL. Most of the time it is HIGHYL ILEGAL. I have personal used a Gameboy emulator on another computer (my brother told me I should use it) because I liked MegaMan and the games are very rare in australia but I haver deleted the emulator. I would not suggest you use an Emulator unless you have lots of knowledge in what your doing, where to get it, how it's used, where to download things for it (eg. PS2 game files for a PS2 Emulator), all the legal stuff, the copyright info, and how to back-up your computer.
I highly suggest you don't use Emulators if you don't need them.
Hope this helps.

It basically pretends it's an iPhone. Sort of like a bootleg or copycat.
