Use them to disable unneeded services and start-up programs.

I can't recall if Windows 2000 came with msconfig. If it didn't, I believe you can still obtain it from Microsoft. "mmc" should still work, though. All you do is go to Start>Run, and type in "mmc" without the quotation marks. Then, disable any services that you don't need, particularly any unnecessary networking components.
