Best friends betray each other because it makes life much more interesting. Fighting every now and then is a healthy part of the relationship (well that's what I think. Nothing physical though.) Betrayal is the true test of the depth of your friendship. If you are truly best of friends then you will overcome the minor trifles of life and forge a stronger bond than ever.

In my case even if its just a close friend I always make it a point to act annoying and to pester him/her. Those who pass this test I treasure for they accepted me and forgave my transgression. So far I have 3 people who passed the test and they have all made my life so much more interesting. They are really good friends to have.

So to sum it up betrayal can be use as a positive force.
Unless, of course, you seriously want to kill each other.
