Apart from the obvious things turn off the water. Our mailman was telling me about a house where kids poked the garden hose through the letterbox and turned it on. Turn off the gas, turn out the oil. get cheap random timers to turn on various lights.

1 - Make sure all the plants are watered or on timed sprinklers.

2 - Set your water heater to a vacation mode or turn it off.

3 - Notify your neighbors (if you trust them), give them a way to contact you when you're gone, and let them know when you'll return. Also notify them of anyone who might be coming by while you're gone (to water plants, feed animals, or whatever).

4 - Either arrange to have someone come over to collect your mail and papers, or have delivery suspended while you're away.

5 - Make sure all windows are shut and securely latched. Close all blinds and window coverings for windows that are readily visible or accessible..

6 - Check the fridge for items that might spoil by the time you get back.

7 - Remove all trash (especially garbage in the kitchen trash can) before you leave.

8 - Run the dishwasher.

9 - Get a timer for at least one light, and maybe a radio or TV.

10 - Turn off your porch lights before you leave.

11 - If you leave cars in front of your house, remove all valuables and put them in the house.

12 - Lock all doors when you leave.

13 - Have a good trip.

If you have a neighbor that you trust, you can have them watch your house while you are out of town. Go to the post office and have your mail collected there while you are out of town. Stop any news paper deliveries while you are gone too. If you have an alarm system, use it, and let the alarm company know that you are out of town and when you will return.
You can also contact your police department, and ask if they have a vacation watch program. This is where they will do extra patrol in your area and pay special attention to any thing out of the norm at your house. Make sure all doors and windows are locked.

You should have cut off valves on all water outlets. Turn it off there. Especially turn off the connections to the washer. Those hoses wear out. I knew some people who came home to a flooded, moldy house. The water had drained down into the basement, and the neighbors didn't see it.

One thing I do is shut the water to the washer off if the hoses rupture then you have a flood and a high water bill

Clean out any items in the fridge that may go bad, empty the trash, bleach the garbage disposal, I guess I may be obsessed with the smelly things.
