Isn't there a way to irrigate it?? Were building a house but need topsoil...trying to save the tree.

you can also slow down the "crown suffocation" problem by taking off the topsoil from around the tree (a 3ft radius) and replacing to the new soil level with large gravel or rocks. this is not a perfect solution, but it's the easiest one.

It will die unless the topsoil is removed. More than 4" of soil added over the roots will kill it.

Dig out 5-6 foot diameter circle around the tree, remove the excess topsoil down to the original level and then build up a retaining wall to keep the soil out. You will be left with a tree in a well.

Or, if the tree is not too big, dig it out and replant so that the crown or trunk flare is at the proper level.
