My 1996 Nissan 200sx has a small motor oil leak that happens only when the car is left on and it's apparently dew to a faulty oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket. Could this be the reason why my check engine light is on? Any other common reasons why I might have my check engine light on and could this be very serious? Is it probably dew to my faulty gaskets? The car seems to run fine without much engine noise, it only has about 121k miles on it and it has recently had a tune up. Thank you all for your help!

there is a number of reasons your check engine light is coming on...take it to a repair shop and they should be able to hook it up to a meter and download a code to help diagnose your problem. it may also just be one of your sensors going bad

I know we do not have the same car, I have a firebird Formula, but I have found AutoZone really helpful! They hook up a machine and diognose coding issues. The reason why my check engine light came on was because my catalytic Converter was hollowed out and it was creating emmision problems. I also had a check engine light come on with one of my mustangs because of a aftermarket gas cap! The light is triggered really easily, it could be anything!

Cruiser is right.
Unless the leaks have dropped the oil below minimum it's something else wrong with the engine.
(Might even mean scheduled maintenance due. -
Don't know if that model does this.)
While they're checking, - fix the damn gaskets already.

ONE OF MANY THINGS COULD BE WRONG....................

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

It could be serious. The check engine light tells you that there something malfunctioning. It could also be a short somewhere.
Have your vehicle scanned for code, then come back and submit them for help.
Good lack!

The light only comes on if there is a problem with the engine management system. it's not because of the oil leak
