i already bought a new one, but im giving my old one to a family member. i dont want to give them something they cant really use, and im willing to spend around $800 to get this one fixed. i am really only looking for a place to take it to get fixed, ie. circut city or some place like that. im not really looking for advice on buying a new one or about how much it costs. i just want to know where to take it. thanks.

ps- its a sony vaio, either v series or vx series, i cant recall.

This is a bit of shameless promotion, I'm afraid, but...
Take it to your local branch of Staples, ask to speak the the "Easy Tech" associate... they will arrange to send it to a repair hub, who can replace the screen for a lot less than $800.
You can also call 1-800-4EZ-TECS for information

In all fairness, I'm sure many of the other stores can do the same, I just happen to work for Staples... :-)

You can use this link:
http://www.screentekinc.com/ppc-generic-%7Bkeyword%7D.shtml?method=Yahoo&source=Yahoo&kw={keyword}&OVRAW=screen%20replacement&OVKEY=screen%20replacement&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=1884160022&OVKWID=17813380022

This company will provide you with the new LCD screen, but they will not replace it for you. This should give you a good estimate of how much you will need to spend. Even if you are heavily invested in the laptop, you can probably replace the whole thing for just a little more. You can always buy something with a smaller hard and optical drives and swap them into your new laptop. That is much easier than changing the LCD.

Good Luck!

What brand? If the cost of repair is a little less than buying a new one. I suggest not to get it repaired just get a new one.
