This is definitely true. The first question that comes to mind is. What do we have control over on this earth and what don't we have control over? In AA most meetings have a prayer that is said at each meeting. God, Grant me the serenity to except the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
The other person does not have my brain there fore I can not change him. What a mixed up world it would be if we could.
The only person I can change is me. Everything outside of me I have no power over.
"Love" is the ability and willingness to allow those that you care for to be what they choose without any insistence that they satisfy you. " by Wayne Dyer PHD. Motivational speaker, Author, and Therapist

True. Because any change they make will not be lasting. They will eventually go back to their old ways *and if they do not, that will be a result of their own will to stay that way.*
Motivation can't come from another person-- you can't quit smoking, lose weight, get ahold of your bad temper or end your drinking problem because someone ELSE nags you about it or lays awake at night worrying about it. The motivation has to come from you alone.

You cannot change a person who doesn't truly want to change. You can maybe force them to change outwardly sometimes, but if they don't want it inside there will be tons of resentment and a lot of gritting and bearing it until they either can't anymore or the person who is trying to change them goes away.
I believe you can help someone see that they need to change or that better things wait for them, but you cannot force someone to.

Individuals can only change themselves, and must have true inner desire to do it not for someone else, but for themselves. The end!

A man convinced against his will,
is of the same opinion still.
Still, I suppose you have to change if someone cut off your legs or something...
