There are tons of wasps just underneath the first layer of shingles on my roof building a nest. What is the safest way to get rid of them?

Use the hornet/wasp spray. But, do so after sunset. During daylight hours, the wasps are out and about. If you spray during the day, you won't get them all. And, returning wasps may try to attack you.

After sunset, all of the wasps will have returned to the nest and you can get them all.

All the garden shops sell cans of spray for that. Make sure that whatever you buy shoots out a stream of foam so you can saturate the area from a safe distance.
