You have to hook the rails into the headboard either by slots or bolts and nuts. Then hook them into the footboard the same way. Then you have a place to lay the box springs and mattress on the rails. They usually have little feet on them and supports that go across the width. Those require a special piece to hold them together. It has a sort of L shaped bolt to hold it.
