I understand that there are wonders being discovered in astronomy and space exploration but up to this point I don't see much that could help survival of mankind. Does anyone have any idea how far a billion light years is? And who cares if there's another black hole in the universe. The money that was spent for the trip to the moon could've been better used to find cure for cancer or the commone cold.

On the other hand, the seas can be a great source of food. Should'nt we concentrate instead probing the depths of the ocean and studying its inhabitants for possible unlimited source of food.

My thought is, no.... If we can reach out into space, and learn how to survive out there - that'll ensure man's enduring the ending of Earth.

If Earth is clobbered by an asteroid, or (probably more likely) we poison ourselves to death, and we don't have a toe hold into space - then we're finished. Man's ultimate survival depends on space exploration. Don't get me wrong, the sea is important also - but if Earth goes - the ocean will go along with it, and that is essentially that...

Its human curiosity, and the thirst for knowledge that drives us to do research. How the hell can you say "who cares" about that stuff? If we didn't have this, you would be an idiot who would still think the Earth was flat.
You and people like you seem to be taking these common knowledges for granted, but a few hundred years ago most of them were laughed at.

Hmm... I think that maybe we should channel a small amount of money into discovering medicinal uses of plants and other life in the seas and rainforests.
