Richard Bingham, 7th Earl of Lucan. He was a member of the English aristocracy and he mysteriously vanished after his children's nanny was found murdered in 1974. The most likely theory is that he murdered her and fled and committed suicide.
Her inquest recorded the cause of death as murder by Lord Lucan - the last time ever, before the law changed, that an English inquest named a murderer as the cause of someone's death.

He was Richard John Bingham, 7th Earl of Lucan, who disappeared Nov. 8, 1974 and the nanny of his child was found murdered at the same time. He has still never been found, but was he murdered or was he kidnapped or was he the murderer? No one knows. It is all still a mystery.
Some possible thoughts are: He had gambling and financial issues ... was this the cause? He was estranged from his wife, who was mentally ill, and she had custody of their three children ... did he kill the nanny or did the wife, in an effort to keep or gain custody of the children? It's a great mystery.

The facts in the Lucan case well known however what intrigues most British people was his complete disappearance. Many people in Briton still believe that there was a massive cover up by the Establishment, bearing in mind the massive media coverage it seems unlikely to me somebody would have blown the whistle, if only for financial gain( media story's, press rewards etc.

I assume you didn't mean his forebear, the senior Army officer who was one of the trio responsible for the catastrophic Charge of the Light Brigade. The chap did very well, dying in 1888 as a Field Marshal.
