The North Side hands down.
You're going to want to stay away from the South, West, East, and West-North West sides of town.
In the avoided parts of town there is crime, child abuse, welfare abuse, gangs, uneducated people, high drop out rate, and drug use.
Stay outside of 410 between I-10 and I-35. The only place inside 410 would be Alamo Heights. It's a very nice area. The only thing is, it's not too affordable.
I grew up on the NE side of town near Thousand Oaks and Jones Maltsberger. The homes around here are very nice, and affordable. The homes range from 6 months to 20 years old, and a prices are very low...
-1 Year old home, 1,300-3,200 sq feet: 99,000 $189,000
-20 Year old home, 1,000-2,700 sq feet: $93,000-140,000
My parents back yard is mcallister park. The neighborhood is called Hunters Mill. It's a very quiet, safe, and community oriented neighborhood.
It's also in the North East ISD, which just announced it had the most exemplary schools in the city.
Welcome...I hope you enjoy your move.

Anywhere north of 1604 or close to 1604 is a good place to be. Centrally, Alamo Heights is also a nice area, it is just northeast of downtown. I am one of those people that know every inch of our city because I either worked there or have been to school there or had friends who lived there. I am not comfortable walking around poverty areas at night, but they have some great historic areas and I have never had any problems during the day. To live in...I myself live on the Northeast side and although I love this area, I, too, am considering a move as soon as my oldest son graduates as San Antonio is growing by leaps and bounds. Again, go North of 1604 anywhere North. I would even say North of 1604 East or West or South. You are close enough to the city, but far enough away from the crime. Helotes is charming as are the Garden Ridge and Bulverde areas. All within minutes to San Antonio and within a few years it will be prime SA real estate.
Our dear city has so much history and charm, and the people are so kind. We are centrally located near the hill country, two hours from the coast, and closer yet to the meca of the best music industry in this part of the country (Austin). I have property in Bandera also and plan someday to move there permanently as not long from now, Bandera is going to be part of San Antonio. We are growing that fast.
I hope you enjoy your move and come here. By the way, both the Northside and Northeast school districts have been given exceptional awards nationally and well as statewide.

The far west side/northwest side The area around Sea World There is still a lot of construction going on here but everywhere you look it is new. Every part of the city has it's fair share of crime, Frankly we don't see a lot of crime in this area. The amenities are great, either built or under construction is a HEB Plus, Super Wal--mart, A new general hospital, Sea World , Six flags (close buy), hotels, motels, restaurants, fast food places, Car washes, Gas stations, CTI, Washington Mutual, Micro Soft Service center, banks, Kohl's, Target, two colleges, and much more to come. There was 60,000 new homes just built, under construction or waiting for a crew to build it. The homes in this area start at about $90.000 and go to about $300,000, but the average is about $150,000. From the intersection of Potranco Road and Loop 1604 to down town San Antonio is about 15 minutes. The rest of the city has growth also, but this is the hottest at this time and is just into the very edge of the hill country.
note; this is the NISD (Northside Independent School District) and is the only school district where all of the schools passed the TAKS testing requirements.

Where you move in SATX is really dependent on your needs and desires. Important things to look at`are: where are you going to work, do you have children, and what`can you afford. While you are getting the idea from the previous answers that the north side is the nicest area of town, there are good areas throughout the city.
For my wife and I, when we moved back into the city, the schools were the primary issue. We chose to live in Stone Oak for many reasons, but most significantly for Bush MS and Reagan HS. Additionally, the area was centrally located with good access to major thouroughfares and excellent shopping and restaurants in the area.
We have, however, lived all over the city at one time or another. We lived inside loop 410 on the northeast side while I was in the army, to be close to Fort Sam Houston, though at the same time my wife kept an appartment on the west side as her office was on the far west side and she often had to work very late and was too tired to drive safely home. When I first retired from the Army we moved to Alamo Heights. This is a bedroom community embedded in the heart of the city and very close to downtown, it has it's own schools which are excellent and smaller than the schools in most of the city.
We then built a house in north San Antonio next to the UTSA Campus just inside Loop 1604 and in the northside school district. This put me very close to my office in the medical center and my wife could get to the hospital she works out of which is just off 1604. Again the area was clean, safe and had great schools.
When I moved my office to downtown San Antonio, we considered looking for a condo inside the downtown area or a house in King William, but the prices were pretty steep for less room and the taxes were very high for that part of the city. Also the schools were not the best and we would have had to send our kids to private schools, which meant driving them and other problems so we made another choice and moved out of the city to the Canyon Lake Area. This is 45 minutes from downtown (a little longer if you hit rush hour). It is in the hill country and is a great area for enjoying the deer and the lake. We kept our boats on the lake and moving there gave us easy access. We found the Comal COunty Schools to be exemplary and had no problem getting to the city driving in on Hwy 281. We also found that our $250,000 house in the city cost us about $175000 atthe lake, the taxes were lower and we didn't have to fight the SATX traffic.
We also have lived in the Castle Hills community and found it to be a charming area which met all our needs.
So as you can see there are a lot of areas to live where you can have everything you want. For our part I think my wife likes to move every few years just to keep from doing a really good cleaning on the house or having to clear out the excess stuff from the garage.
Essentially you are going to spend from $125,000 to $250,000 for a 2400-2600 ft home in north SATX. But if you want you can get a 2500 sq ft home in the Dominion for $600,000.
To tell the truth I think we have found that the best area to live is the one we just moved from. I guess in all cases memories are better than reality
The cost of living is low to moderate in SATX but it is increasing as the city grows. 2 years ago SA was the 9th largestcity in the US and 3rd largest in TX now it is the 7th largest in US and 2nd in TX having grown faster than Dallas.
Good luck in your move, hope you find a great home!

STAY WHERE YOU ARE! San Antonio is hot, humid, crowded, NOT Enough Water for everyone, City Government has run amok. Were still trying to purge the Katrina indigents. The Katrinas' that had a life already went back.
