it honestly depends on the situation and how long you've known the person.. but honestly the whole "i'd rather just be friends" is the best way.. .it's lame.. but its the only way to not truly hurt their feelings.. but if you have a valid explanation you should give to that person instead of making them wonder.

Men dump women here by telling them they are too busy at work. Then when you see their Avatar coming down the scroll, you get the picture. It hurts and you feel really stupid.
So, rather than That pain, just use the "always busy" and "never have time to call" because anything else is criticism and hurts them. The world is full of rejection and we all get plenty.

I'm not sure that you can. Maybe some ways are better or more tactful than others but there is still more than likely going to be some hurt feelings or pride from the recipient.

u just tell them like it is. "hey man i don't want to be a jerk or nothing but back the f*k off okay?" you can be even nicer and say thank you. well that's how i do it anyways. and believe me I've done it a time or two.
