This is something that I have never understood. Why would they support a party that isn't looking out for their interests at all?

The republicans have been very effective in their saturation of the media outlets, and pure genius on demonizing the Dem's.
If you tell a lie long enough and often enough. Misinformed people will begin to believe it.
This is why we need to reintroduce the fairness doctrine.
And this is why the republicans are screaming like crazy to keep things just the way they are.

There are a number of possibilities.

They could be unaware that Republicans don't have thier best interests at heart. (Though, really, if that's your criterion for voting, Democrats aren't exactly an option, either).

Your second premise could be wrong - that is, the policies typically enacted by republicans might not be as bad for the 'working class' as you seem to think.

They could be voting based on principle rather than self-interest. For instance, if you strongly oppose abortion, you might not vote for a Democrat who strongly supports it, even if she might try to get you free healthcare.

They could be voting in incumbents. Many people assume that an incumbent must be the most qualifed for the job, and congressional and senate seats can remain in the same party's hands for decades as a result.

They could be 'voting for the person, no the party.' Perhaps based on personality, perhaps on positions held by the candidate that differ from the rest of his party.

They could be voting on a narrow, local interest. For instance, a Congressman often funnels Federal largess to his constituency. That paycheck-to-paycheck job might be in a local business that is only kept afloat by 'pork' provided by the congressman. His party - even his policies, wouldn't seem that important in comparison.

They could be voting for the candidate they feel is the most patriotic. You can see how that might not be the Democrat, I hope.

They could be voting on foreign-policy issues that they feel strongly about, or other national issues that they feel are more important than thier own situation.

They could feel that recieving 'help' from the government would be a blow to thier pride, and thus prefer to struggle, rather than vote for & accept a 'hand up.'

By supporting the Dem's does that mean they not going to live paycheck to paycheck? I don't think neither parties have the poor people best interest. Poor people being supporting Democrats for so long i don't know why they still support them if they don't really change their life.

They realize that the reason they live from paycheck to paycheck is that they did not prepare themselves for a better job. They take responsiblity for their position in life and do not consider themselves victims of "the man".

they have glorified working and not asking for any help for anything... even though most in the situation you describe would be in deep poverty if they ever got very sick and had to go to the hospital... or if much of a recession hit

then they lean on the system...

those Republicans turn into Democrats pretty quick when times go bad and they have no one left to turn to and the Republicans are demonizing them...

in other words... they are one stroke of bad luck away from turning into a hypocrite...

Like Jewish Nazis or wealthy communists!
If they earn less than $20,000 they probably don't pay federal tax thanks to Democrats, but if Republicans get their way, these people will pay 15% federal flat tax regardless of how poor they are, or a whopping 23% Fair Tax, which is the National Sales Tax being pushed by the rich.

I don't get it either. The only thing that explains this is ignorance. They aren't stupid. But they lack the information to vote in their own interests. And, they get fooled into thinking that Republicans have morals that they share with them. It's pretty sad really.

They vote only one interest:

Abortion
Gay marriage
Right to tote an AK 47
White supremacy

Read "What's the Matter With Kansas" and you will gain some insight.

Why do you flag burners think that all Republicans are rich? maybe they just have ethics. Maybe because they work for a living, they dont want to see their money going into the filthy hands of someone that doesnt work. Maybe they oppose welfare and other hand out social programs.

More importantly, why would you care?
