I recently bought a home. The front yard is awful. We need to redo all the plants, add one tree, and remove the old walkway and add a new one. We are not handy people. Is this something we could contract Home Depot to do? Or, should we consult a landscape architect? Money is VERY limited. Does anyone have advice and do you know about how much something like this costs?

If not handy, don't do it yourself --- your mistakes will be more costly than paying someone to do it right.

You don't need a landscape architect but a landscape designer is needed. Most good garden centres (not big box stores like Home Depot -- find a medium size family run garden centre who also do installation) will have designers who will provide a plan at nominal cost or for free if you buy your plants from them.

Get a design first so that you know where the new walkway will be and where to position the plants. If possible, do the walkway first. You can save some money by removing the old plants and walkway yourself then havea professional install the new ones.

Hi Suebee:
I am glad you got a home but sorry your landscaping and wlakway is so bad. Unfortunately I would not do any major landscape around your foundation until you get the sidewalk redone. This is called hard-scape and if you put new plants in around your foundation and then in the future decide to get a new wallkway, there may be a chance your shrubs or flowers could be ruined. Taking a walkway out requires major work and the chances of your plant specimens surviving are not good. Is your grass or sod in good condition or do your need to replace it or reseed?

Is your tree away from your home so you could replace that?
What geographic location are you in as far as planting in the fall season or spring?

I would love to hear from you and know a little more details to give you some advice. Please feel to contact me and I would be happy to help!

if money is limited, do most of it yourself. let the walkway go for as long as you can then hire someone in a couple of years. everything else, just start reading about how to do it all. it's not that hard, you'll make some mistakes but landscaping can be fun.

North side of the church, or south side? Full sun or part shade? Are you in the north part of the country? Northeast? Southeast? Midwest? Southwest? Southern California? Pacific Northwest? Perhaps you should look around the neighborhood and take a good look at what is growing and looking healthy. Then take a few leaves of that plant to the nursery and someone there should identify it for you. Most of the standard shrubs are standard because they tolerate weather, poor soil, and require minimal care. Good luck.
