I have had both of my boys via c-section( 1st in 03, 2nd in 05). I'm pregnant with my 3rd and I'm weighing the options of another c-section or VBAC. I've heard alot of different stuff. Any input???

I'd try for the Vbac, if you can!

The largest study of its kind ever conducted undertaken by the National Institute of Child Health showed that risks are higher for a repeat caeserean than they are for the vaginal delivery simply because a caesarean is major surgery and carries inherent risks like infection, besides the additional risks to mother and child from the incision and anesthesia.

The main risk associated with VBAC is uterine rupture and this only occurs in about 0.7% of VBAC's. And even when it does occur, the chances are like 99% that the baby will be perfectly healthy and the mother will recover completely and still retain her fertility. One factor that increases the risk for rupture is when drugs are needlessly used to speed up or induce labor (like pitocin) so a VBAC is most successful when the mother is allowed to go into labor naturally.

This study also showed there is NO significant difference in the maternal death rate (it's still less than 1% both ways) between VBAC moms and moms who go for a repeat c-section.

Read THE BIRTH BOOK by Dr. Williams Sears - an entire chapter is devoted to vbac and has all the stats!

I am right there by your side. I had my first c-section with my daughter august 7th 2004, my second daughter I had a c-section October 13th, 2005 and I am having my third daughter and my third c-section next friday August 17th at 9 in the morning. I looked on the Internet I read some books because I would like to have more kids some day because I am the only child and I love children. But my doctor told me pretty much at this point I really would rather be on the safe side and just have the third c-section. He said with the previous scarring from the other surgeries it could create a problem during labor. I am scared as the day gets closer and closer because I know that I have to go through this again. But my grandma had 4 c-sections in the older days with the scarring went from top to bottom. It is completely your decision though. I always say to my self man what If I go into labor and go through all that agonising pain and then they give me my third c-section anyway so that's how I convinced myself into the third c-section. Good luck to you and I am sure whatever decision you do make will be the best one for you.

I would try for the VBAC, just because its a quicker recovery and you might be sad if you never have the birthing experience (my mom is always talking about how sad she feels that she was never able to deliver naturally) but if your doctor insists upon a c-section its probably for a good reason. C-sections are usually only performed when the risks of not having one out weighs the risks of having one. Thats why most doctors won't do an elective c-section.
Good luck

First talk to your doc about VBAC...some doc's won't let you after 2 csec's so I would ask first. All depends on doc's and the insurance they carry. My doc would do a vbac but he switched diff. insur. carrier and they told him once a csec always one. How many are safe? Depends on how many you have, how far apart they are and what the doc thinks also. I believe my doc says he doesn't like anymore than 4 per person. Some docs will say around there 3-4 I think. Best bet is to talk to your doc b/c you may have decisions on stuff and he can let you know what he does to help you make those decisions.
Good luck and congrats!

I have heard 2 c-sections are safe. You don't want to continue cutting into the same spot. However, medicine today has changed. I have heard of women that have c-section then vaginal then C-section.

I had my daughter 5 years ago C-section due to being over my due date and she was 9.1lbs. (yikes) I don't think I will have another child, however that may change. Talk to your doctor about your options and what is best for you and your little one!!

I had 3 c-sections and my doctor said that I could have as many as I wanted to. He said that he had a patient who had 8 c-sections and she did fine. But if you are worried talk to you doctor about the risks of both.
