My 1990 Acura wouldn't start one afternoon. I tried a few times that day and also the next day. The engine would crank strongly - the lights did not dim, but it wouldn't start. Out of the blue the next morning I got it to stat right away. I took it to the repair shop anyway because I want a reliable car and don't want to be stranded anywhere again. He found nothing wrong with it so far because it started for him. Of course there's a charge of $100 to diagnose it. What should I do? I don't want to play russian roulette with my car either starting or stalling. It hasn't given me problems the last 6 years.

I didn't notice a fuel smell in my garage while I tried starting it, but I wasn't back by the tailpipe.

I thought when it was a starter problem that there would be just a click sound. The motor was turning over each time I tried. Oh and there was half a tank of gas in there in case anyone asks. Thanks for all answers so far.

Something is going on with the ignition because everything else is working. The starter should be checked because when it is failing it will sometimes be intermittent. Did the rmechanic check the starter for you?

for me it can be the starter when tou try to star the engine so many times tend to over heat and it won't start but if you try when is cold start right away check this by hearing the sound of the start if it sounds really fast still good but if sounds weak is the starter do you have a good battery , alternator but i really think is that , i have a saturn 6years old and was doing the same thing i bought a new battery ,we change the alternator ,and at last we got the starter and now is just fine take e look and i hope i goit right .

the next time and there will be a next time before you leave another $100 tip, after cranking smell the tailpipe for a heavy fuel smell.. if present suspect an ignition problem... if no fuel odor suspect a fuel pump related problem.. then send me $20 as i could use it...

I had the same problem on my 91 integra. It was the pickup in the distributor. I paid about $40 at the dealer and put it in with just a screw driver in about 20 minutes. Has worked fine since. Three years....

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.
