Especially for something like nursing, online is very suspect. You need the hands on clinical practice and teaching.

I'd never want to be treated by a nurse or doctor who learned online. That's worse than me looking up some directions online and trying to treat myself. At least I'd take extra care to learn what I could because it's my own life on the line.

If you're trying to be an RN there are going to be a number of practical classes that you'll absolutely have to take at a campus, since you'll do hands on work requiring direct supervision.

That being said, there are plenty of undergraduate requirements that you could take online which your campus would accept. These class include the basics - English composition, English Lit, Sociology, some basic math, economics, history -- you know the "core" classes that make you a "well rounded" person, but in many cases are simply repeats of stuff you took in high school.

Find the CHEAPEST way to take these classes (test out if you can). If online is cheaper -- great. Community college cheaper -- great. Save your money.

By the by, you'll need to get a BA or BS (undergraduate degree) to be able to compete in this current nursing market. Its not that an RN without a bachelor degree won't enable you to get a job, you just won't be able to compete for the more desirable jobs and you will find it difficult to advance in your career.

Good luck. We need more nurses.

Most online universities are actually For Profit corporations, and are not well regarded by employers. Many employers (like Intel for example) will pay for employees to take college classes -- but will not pay for classes at online colleges.

If I were hiring and saw a resume from someone from a school like University of Phoenix, I would just throw away the resume.

In addition to not being well regarded -- they are also more expensive than more highly regarded public universities.

I don't know if employers will know if it's an on-line degree.
Taking classes on-line can be easier on your time, but being in class gets you a better understanding of the subject matter and you can inter-act with the instructor and other students.
