That's interesting, and did you also know that apparently The Whirling Dervishes trace their origin to the 13th century Ottoman Empire. The Dervishes, also known as the Mevlevi Order, are Sufis, a spiritual offshoot of Islam. So it all progressed from there I suppose.

The Mevlevoopee, or Mevleviye, one of the most well known of the Sufi orders, was founded in 1273 by Rumi's followers after his death, particularly his son, Sultan Veled Celebi (or Çelebi, Chelebi). The Mevlevi, or "The Whirling Dervishes", believe in performing their dhikr in the form of a "dance" and music ceremony called the sema.
The Sema represents a mystical journey of man's spiritual ascent through mind and love to "Perfect." Turning towards the truth, the follower grows through love, deserts his ego, finds the truth and arrives at the "Perfect." He then returns from this spiritual journey as a man who has reached maturity and a greater perfection, so as to love and to be of service to the whole of creation.

This is true. Have you not heard of the saying "they are like a whirling dervish" - if you see someone running around, really busy etc you say, they were like a whirling dervish!

The Twirling Dervish Dancers are just a group of men that have to be trained for years to dance and spin like they do for hours..... Earlier in their history they were used in a very different way by the men that they entertained... And it has only been in that last few hundred years... That their dancing has become a form of entertainment only.......... What you should do is read their history for yourself, You will gain a great deal more insight in that way...............................................

Yeah. They wear a wierd robe and a pointy hat, all white. I've heard that some of them dance to exhaustion. There's a cool clip of them in the opening credits to "The Accidental Spy"

Okay. Now you are up to speed on that one. BTW they whirl surprisingly slowly. Ever heard of Michel Montaigne? Ever heard of a cedilla?
