Joe is right i work a BMW and if it over heats just a little you can warp the heads and even the bolck deck, soulds like an easy fix the E46 is all computer controled, even if there is a problem the check engine light may not come on , you need to go the the dealership or a shop with a DIS (the computer used to talk to the car it is BMW specific) to get it checked before you end up buying a new engine

Theres a fan on your radiator that could be broken. When you're driving, the radiator gets enough cool air, thats why it only seems to be overheating when you're not moving. This is what happened on my Nissan Altima.

If it overheats at a stand still but runs cool on the open road you need a new thermostat. aslo if it over heats turn the heater on high. If the temp gauge move to normal setting then you need a new thermostat. Also when you added the new coolant did you blled the system of air. most radiators have a plasic srew on top for this.

With coolant (is it a 50/50 mix?) and fans out of the way, check these other items:
- Bleed radiator
Use a coin if you don't have a big enough screwdriver) Be careful not to break the plastic bleed screw. While you're at it, check to see if the outside of your radiator (the fins) are in god condition and not blocked by mud or something... hose it clean if it is.
- Thermostat
If this is stucked in the closed position, no matter how much cold water you have in your radiator, your car can still overheat
- Water pump
This circulates the water around between engine and radiator.
- Radiator hoses
These tend to wear out from the inside... the particles can block water flow inside the engine.

Many things can cause the problem. A (mechanical) thermostat sticking, Electrical thermostat sticking, improper coolant level, improper timing. You should take it to a bmw mechanic and have it diagnosed before you ruin the engine.

It sounds like your fan clutch is going bad. If it goes bad, it may still spin, but with weak strength and your engine may overheat in slow traffic.
