I recently aquired a old windows 98 computer system with 256 megs of ram and I wanted to know how far I could upgrade it. I wanted to put windows xp or 2000 on it and I cant seem to find a place where I can change the dial up setting to broadband. If anyone could help me I would be grateful.

does the computer meet the minimum requirements??? per MSN's site on XP ...

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition

• PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

• 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*

• Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor

• CD-ROM or DVD drive

• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

ALSO, if you're going broadband you will need an ethernet card instead of a dial up modem or a USB card - depends on the type of cable modem you have.

Depends on how old and how much memory you can add.

First get the name of the computer and go to the manufactures web site to see how much memory it can hold. As long as it is 512 Meg you should be able to go to XP. Many old computers did not have a Ethernet card installed on the mother board like they are today. You may have to buy an Ethernet card if you intend to do broad band.

This being said and cheap computer now days would cost about $500. and save you allot of grief and have it all set up.
After you buy the memory and XP and an Ethernet card you will still have an old computer.

It will handle XP, in fact XP would be your best bet. You can always addon, bigger hard drive, 512 mem. usb ports. If it is an older computer, you may have to add an ethernet 10/100 card.

you can put xp on it. xp doesnt really take any resources to load. Also, when you connect an etherent cord you wont have to set anything up. it will set itself up. if it doesnt make a new connection and choose always connected. your motherboard should already have an RJ-45 jack integrated onto it.
