My Betta fish, Sofa, is 5 years old. (He's called Sofa, because he lives on the table...well next to our sofas.)

Recently, my betta fish is getting this one light/ gray spot near the gills, and his gills are kind of red too. He keeps opening up his gills really wide. There's this little hole on his pelvic fins. He also takes these big gulps. Is there something wrong? Please tell me as soon as possible.

The fish is near the end of it's life span. I say let it go in peace and NEVER try to keep any more fish... After reading your other question, I think it would be best for the fish.

Your betta is suffering. You have him in a peanut butter jar (evident by your other question) and he's being burned and poisoned by the poor water quality. Fish pee and poop in their water. Food also rots if uneaten. These wastes turn to ammonia. The ammonia burn and poison the fish. Your fish is old and needs better care. Please get him an appropriate tank and take better care of him. Just because he has "survived" this long doesn't mean he has "thrived" at all. Even people can live in the grossest of conditions for long periods of time. If you do use melafix to treat him then please cut the dose in half. Melafix can cause problems with a betta's breathing. Bettafix is a diluted version of melafix and is easier to administer to bettas because the dosing is more accurate.

The gray spot sounds like old age (no joke), and the redness in the gills sounds like an infection or water that was not dechlorinated. The gulps are normal (Bettas breathe from the atmosphere, not the water). For more help from more knowledgeable people, check out the link in my profile.
