Thermostat is not opening. You need a new one.

two possibilities i can think of. first is a non opening thermostat... replace it, its a cheap fix. the second can be answered when you remove the thermostat. if you see no coolant below the stat, there was an air lock in the engine that prevented you from actually getting the thing full. this is solved by pouring more coolant into the radiator; while the thermostat is out of the engine, until it is about 1/2 inch below the place the thermostat bolts up. finish bolting down the thermostat, fill the radiator and return jug and try warming it again. check the level in the recovery jug periodically when cold for a few days and add what is missing each time till it stays on the full mark. the coolant from the jug will eventually displace the rest of the air in the cooling sytem, the heater should work and you will be a happy camper again. i wish you well with it.

when the thermostat opens the level in the radiator will drop and more coolant can be added... if the thermostat is stuck open it may take some time to feel heat.. if it is stuck closed it will start overheating and blow the coolant out the top of the radiator.... and also there may an airlock in the system so it may take a couple heat/cool cycles to get everything full

Run the car with the radiator cap off for awhile, could be an air lock. By removing the cap it takes away the pressure and lets things move easier. If the car does not overheat then it is not the thermostat. Possibility does remain that it could be the water pump, see if it is shuttering, or squealing.

You have air trapped in the system. Did you leave the radiator cap off while the engine warmed up to operating temp and keep it topped off with coolant?

try this method. remove radiator cap and fill the coolant to the top. wait 15 minutes and fill it up again. do it 3 times. make sure you pour the coolant very slowly. after you done filling the coolant. close the radiator cap and drive the vehicle for one mile and turn engine off. wait until engine is cool and check coolant level.

the thermostat might be bad and also you have to bleed the air out of the system

You need to bleed the system, and I don't thing that the thermostat is bad.
