If you buy a box of tampons, there is usually a small pamphlet inside explaining how to use them. It takes awhile to get the first time but they are a much better alternative to pads.
Also I'd reccomend buying a multipack with all the different sizes, although you will probably just need the "lite" or "teen" size at first. Tampax Pearl (with the plastic applicators) work the best.
Good Luck :]

How to insert a tampon:
"Relax! Try not to worry about inserting the tampon right the first time. If you are tense it will make insertion harder.
The best time to practice inserting a tampon is during the heavy part of your period. The tampon should glide inside your vagina easily without any discomfort.
Decide if you prefer to insert the tampon standing or sitting. If sitting is your preference, sit on the toilet. If you want to try standing, putting one foot on the bathtub helps.
Hold the tampon applicator in your right hand if you are right-handed, or left if left-handed.
Use your thumb and middle finger to hold the bottom of the larger, outer tube.
Point the tip of the applicator toward your vagina, facing slightly towards the back. The smaller tube should be pointed away from your body.
Use your other hand to open your vagina.
Place the tip of the applicator at the opening of your vagina.
Gently push the smaller end of the applicator in until it is completely inside the larger outer tube. This pushes the tampon into your vagina and out of the tube.
With your thumb and middle finger still on the outer tube, release the smaller tube and let the strings dangle freely.
Gently pull the two tubes out together.
Dispose of the applicator according to the manufactuer's instructions.
When you are ready to remove the tampon, gently pull the withdrawl strings down and forward. The used tampon may be flushed down the toilet.
Tips:
Lubricating the rounded end of the tampon with a water-based lubricant such as K-Y Jelly can make insertion easier the first few times. Don't use petroleum jelly.
Always read the manufactuer's instructions throughly before using any type of tampon.
If the tampon feels uncomfortable it is probably not inserted far enough into your vagina. Try again with a new tampon."

The instructions on the back of the box are pretty self explanitory. What helped me at first was putting one leg up on the side of the tub or the toilet. Makes it easier for the first few times you have to do it.
Just go slow at first so as not to hurt yourself or make it uncomfortable.
Try and buy a package with multiple sizes, start off with the small and see how it feels then move up in size if you need to - a tampon shouldn't be uncomfortable to wear if it's in properly.
You'll be a pro before long, don't worry :)

well if you buy a box of tampons it will explain everything on the box, or you can ask your mom, but because you just started your period its not recommended to start using tampos right away, i think its best to use pads for the first few periods, remember when u first start out you period may not be regular, so id say stick with pads until you know how regular your periods are
oh bye the way im a girl and im 15, i dont want you to get freaked out casue you think a guy is answering this lol

i got my first tampons today and i didnt know how to use them, i read loads of stuff on here, but i still wasnt sure..
i bought a brand called tampax compak, i find it was really easy because it had a plastic cover
what you do with that type is pull on end of the plastic and insert that tube into your vagina, then the bit that you pulled, you then gotta push it so the actual tampon goes inside you
but dont worry if that confused you, they have an instruction leaflet in the box, it tells you about how to insert, and how to take out, also info bout TSS and stuff
i dont know if that brand is in america, i asume it is, but i think you should find one with a plastic cover, because they are very easy for us beginners :P
and remember, just relax, it'll be easier on you
and dont worry, theyre easie than you think
good luck xx

Read the instructions completely and carefully. Don't be afraid to use several, and play around until it's comfortable. If it feels uncomfortable in you, I promise it's not right. You shouldn't feel them once they're in.
Also, I wear panty liners w/ mine, so that if I do leak, I've got a little safety net time to get to a restroom. It's an adjustment, figuring out how fast you'll need to change them.
