I'm saying gay...in the sense that...is it something only homosexuals would do?
I mean...I could see a girl giving her boyfriend a good luck charm before the army....but what about a guy giving his best friend something?

No, it's absolutely normal. You care about your friend and likely have a deep bond with him, and want him to know that.
